IDMUN uses the International Discord Model United Nations Rules of Procedure, which is a blend of THIMUN, UNAUSA, and many other Rules of Procedure (ROP).

Prior to the creation of IDMUN, the IDMUN founder wrote a Reddit post on the subreddit called MUN, which has since been removed, of which the topic was whether or not to create a free online MUN conference. After a positive community reaction to this post, the founder created what has always been known as the International Discord Model United Nations. Within the first 24 hours after the creation, exactly 43 users joined the Discord server.
The first MUN crisis conference, as well as the first committee ever held on IDMUN was the Thanos Crisis, which took place on November 23rd, 2019. Inspired by the popular film Avengers: Endgame, which released in April of that same year, the topic was "Thanos has wiped away half of the population, and the leaders of the world must get a solution!" The topic refers to how international governing bodies would respond to the threat of near destruction by the immediate removal of 50% of the human population. Notable for the IDMUN founder's appearance as the character Thanos, as well as the resolution passed by two people, including Director Jedyrris and current member Medeoker_Boy in one bloc versus that of former Director Skorgi_God in the other, the Thanos Crisis was a successful first crisis conference.
